Boeing, Airbus Face Delays On Parts Shortage - Report
Posted by akzah on Sunday, August 10 @ 09:08:02 PDT (386 reads)
Aviation Boeing and Airbus are facing a slowdown on their older model assembly lines because of a shortage of basic components such as seats, toilets and galleys, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The production disruption was raising costs and delaying millions of dollars in payments from customers, the paper said. Managers at both companies suggested the holdups could affect this year's financial results, the paper reported. The paper quoted Boeing and Airbus as saying that the delays emerged almost a year ago, but have become much worse this year.

The lack of components stem from small suppliers that have overcommitted to build equipment and did not gear up production fast enough to deliver it, the paper said. On Thursday, Boeing announced the first cancellation of an order for its delayed 787 Dreamliner, signaling that airlines may be getting impatient for deliveries of the new, fuel efficient plane. Also on Thursday United Airlines said it may cancel an order for 42 Airbus aircraft, forfeiting a USD$91 million dollar deposit and possibly heralding a wave of deferrals and cancellations for the major plane makers as their customers scale back growth plans.

Kuwait's Alafco Sells Eight 787s To Saudia
Posted by akzah on Sunday, June 29 @ 06:22:22 PDT (444 reads)
Aviation Kuwait's Aviation Lease and Finance Company agreed to sell eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with a list price of USD$1.6 billion, to Saudi Arabian Airlines, Alafco said on Wednesday. The company said in a statement the aircraft would be delivered between 2014 and 2015. Alafco also said it would lease out four Boeings for 12 years to the Saudi carrier with delivery expected in 2012. The list value of one plane is USD$200 million, while the leasing price is 1 percent of the purchase price paid as a monthly rent, Alafco said in the statement posted on the bourse web site. Alafco said earlier this month it agreed with Saudia to lease five new single-aisle Airbus A320s for next year's delivery, as part of the Saudi carrier's fleet renewal program. The Gulf aviation industry is booming as surging economies spurred by record oil prices attract tourists, business people and workers to the world's largest oil-exporting region. Dubai-based Emirates, the United Arab Emirates' Air Arabia and Qatar Airways have bought billions of dollars worth of aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, looking to bring more people to their respective countries or hub passengers from around the world.

US, Kenya Sign 'Open Skies' Deal
Posted by akzah on Sunday, June 29 @ 06:21:33 PDT (417 reads)
Aviation Tourism and Kenyan exports to the United States, especially flowers, are expected to rise due to a deal allowing direct flights between the two countries within a year, the US envoy to Kenya said on Thursday. Transport ministers from both countries signed an 'Open Skies' deal in the United States last week. "Direct flights could facilitate the greater export of Kenyan flowers to the US market where there is a high demand," US Ambassador Michael Ranneberger told a news conference. Kenya's horticulture sector, the largest exporter of cut flowers to Europe, earned the country 70.3 billion Kenya shillings (USD$1.09 billion) last year. Kenyan flower exports to the United States are currently negligible.

An official at the Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya said they expected the US market to account for 2-5 percent of exports at the start of the direct flights and rise gradually. According to the Kenya Tourist Board, 101,879 US tourists visited Kenya in 2007, up from 86,528 the previous year. Tourism took a hit in the violent aftermath of disputed presidential elections last December. "We think that in the next 12 months or so, the US can be the largest source country for tourists to Kenya if we can get direct flights underway," Ranneberger said. Ranneberger said flights could start after negotiations on a 'Safe Skies' agreement are completed. A Safe Skies deal is designed to ensure airlines flying to US airports and foreign airports to which US carriers fly meet US security standards. He said US airline Delta Air Lines was expected to start flights to Nairobi via west Africa next summer.
