| China To Reimpose Airport Construction Fee |
China will reimpose an airport construction fee on its airlines but only for domestic routes and not international flights, an industry source said on Wednesday.
A previous fee was scrapped with effect from January 1 2004 but industry regulator the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) had said it would be replaced with a new, slightly lower levy.
The original fee, which went towards the building of airport infrastructure, amounted to five percent of domestic route revenue and two percent of international routes.
The new charge will be applied retroactively from April 1 on domestic routes only, the source said.
A CAAC official said the Finance Ministry had sent internal memos to airlines regarding the fee.
China suspended the levy from May to September last year to help airlines weather the SARS outbreak, which devastated the travel and tourism industry.
