Lufthansa plans to choose a replacement for its fleet of Boeing 737 short-haul aircraft in the next two years, the airline said on Tuesday. The carrier has not yet decided to what extent or how quickly it will replace the aircraft. The carrier has 33 Boeing 737-300s and 25 Boeing 737-500s, according to its web site. "Whether we grow our continental fleet further depends not least on pay talks, in the context of our concerted efforts to improve Lufthansa's productivity," Lufthansa spokesman Klaus Walther said. Lufthansa also plans to choose a single model for its regional fleet, the Financial Times Deutschland cited Lufthansa chief buyer Nico Buchholz as saying.

Lufthansa will probably set aside a sum for the new aircraft in the next two years, the paper said. The cost of replacing the entire 737 fleet could be about USD$3 billion, based on list prices, the paper said. The airline plans to have talks with both Boeing and rival Airbus, the FT said. Lufthansa has focused more on renewing its long-haul fleet in recent years and it announced a EUR752 million (USD$910.6 million) rights issue earlier this year to help finance the purchase and roll-out of 15 Airbus A380 superjumbos.
