| ExpressJet To Keep Continental Planes |
ExpressJet, which operates regional services for Continental Airlines, said on Friday it told Continental that it plans to keep all 69 aircraft it leases from the larger airline.
The move sets up a potential dispute with Continental, which said last year that it planned to take back the 69 jets operated by Continental after failing to win a cheaper contract for supplying regional services.
Last month Continental said it had chosen Chautauqua Airlines, a unit of Republic Airways, to take over the operation of the regional jets from ExpressJet.
ExpressJet has the option to return the jets, sublease them to another operator, or operate them itself under some other brand name.
The 69 jets represent about a quarter of the 274 planes ExpressJet operates. The regional carrier is the latest to come under pressure from larger partners trying to save money as they struggle with soaring fuel prices.
Houston-based ExpressJet said on Friday it plans to use the 25 ERJ-145LR and 44 ERJ-145XR aircraft "to pursue various strategic options outside the capacity purchase agreement."
