Answer
·  How do I back-up from a gate?

With the push-back function: SHIFT+P to start going back, SHIFT+P then 1 (main keyboard) to back and turn left, SHIFT+P then 2 to back and turn right, and don't forget SHIFT+P again to stop moving!

·  How can I set ATC to only see the ATC window when messages require my response?

In the ATC settings un-check "Show ATC text" and check "Auto-open ATC Window".

·  I have messed up the fs9.cfg file with your silly advice and did not make a back-up, do I need to re-install FS9

No, you can either delete the file (see top of the FAQ for its location) and FS will create a new one, or hold the CTRL and SHIFT keys while FS is loading

·  Why is the water green sometimes?

The "green" or "milky" water issue is the overcast environment texture. The default weather theme "Fair weather" has pockets of cirrus at 6/8 which triggers the overcast environment texture. During the day, this can cause that "milky" looking texture. If you start out with this default weather theme you can see the overcast environment texture on the water. It can change if dynamic weather is turned on, changing back to the time appropriate environment texture

·  Where did the config file go?

For Windows XP users the fs9.cfg file is now located in Drive_Letter:/Documents and Settings/User_Name/Application Data/Microsoft/FS9. This is a hidden folder by default so you need to modify the folder options via the control panel: go to the view tab and check the "Show hidden files and folders" option For Windows 9x users the fs9.cfg file is located in Drive_Letter:/WindowsApplicationData/Microsoft/FS9 Helpful tip from BrianC: Create a shortcut to fs9.cfg and place the shortcut on your desktop. Now you can quickly find it for editing without having to navigate to the buried folder. Alternatively, create a shortcut to the settings folder on your desktop. Note: The paths are given for the US version of Windows, localized version may vary according to their language. If you had manually moved the "my documents" folder by drag & drop or modifying its desktop shortcut FS2004 may not run as this is a "special folder" and its location needs to be configured instead of simply moving it around in Windows Explorer. To learn how to properly move this folder so applications can find it check Windows XP Help & Support on folder redirection, a quick way to do it is to right-click on the folder in the right pane of explorer or on the desktop, choose properties then the move button.

·  Where did gmax go?

Gmax 1.2 is available on the FS9 CD #1, the new export and MakeMDL files will be available in an upcoming SDK

·  How can I take a close look at the AI aircraft around me?

Press CTRL+W (key defined by default in the US version) to open a window showing your plane in spot view, press CTRL+W again to cycle between the ATC controlled aircraft in your vicinity, press ] or right-click on it to close that window.

·  How do I disable the warning message on startup about non-compatible modules?

Add the following lines to the fs9.cfg file [OldModules] name of dll=1

·  How many CDs are there and what is the program's size on the hard drive?

FS9 installs from 4 CDs, compact installation is around 1714.5Mb in size, complete installation is around 2822Mb (exact size can vary slightly according to the OS and file system in use)

·  FS2004 crashes when I display the kneeboard (F10), what is happening?

Another application reported to interfere with FS2004 is "Robo Form" when its "Task Bar Icon" option is enabled. If you are running Robo Form, disable the task bar icon and contact its publisher for an update

·  FS2004 doesn't allow me to choose a higher screen resolution than 800*600, why?

FS2004 requires more than 16Mb of memory for the video card to support higher resolutions

·  I would like to browse the Learning Center without running FS, is it possible?

In Windows Explorer navigate to the FS9-FSweb-LearningCenter folder then create a desktop shortcut to either lc_index_SiteMapTabs.htm or lc_index_KeyTopicsTabs.htm or lc_index_IndexTabs.htm and rename and move that shortcut as you like.

·  How can I change the way runway and approach lights look?

There are now scalars in the FS9 config file that will allow you to scale the size of each category of lights to your liking. The values have to be added to the [DISPLAY] section of the fs9.cfg file, they are set to 1.0 by default. This is a power user option and has no UI. RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR (scales edge, center, end, and touchdown lights) RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR (scales VASI lights) RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR (scales approach light bars) RUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR (scales RAILs and ODALs)

·  What is the frame rate lock in the hardware display settings and how to use it?

This option is used to cap the fps in FS9 so resources are spared for other tasks (texture rendering, GPS, traffic etc...) than pumping as many frame rates as the system can. Make a few flights with your preferred settings and unlimited frame rates and note the average fps you can achieve, then lock your fps to an amount slightly below that average to keep a smooth flight and best image quality. A nice tool to log average frame rates is FRAPS from http://www.fraps.com Mathijs Kok from Lago explained the target frame rate for FS2002 in the following article that applies to FS2004 as well: http://www.lagoonline.com/ENG/articoli/art_1.asp?art=4
